Zone alarm reports that Powerskype is attempting to record my keystrokes as I type. This would allow you to see my passwords, credit card information etc etc.
What is the reason for this?
I see no reason for you to be recording such information.
For now, until I hear from you, explaing why, I have taken Powerskype off my system. |

Which version of Zonealarm and how to set Zonealarm to monitor potential hijacks? We would like to have a test. We don't collect key strokes at all! _________________ Windows 2003

Will reinstall Powerskype and take a closer look at what is going on.
I admit I saw the message, Powerskyke is monitoring keystrokes, and simply deleted the program with out digging into exactly what was happening.
Will get back to you with more detailed information |

Hi Stanri,
I installed ZoneAlarm Security Suite version:6.0.631.003.
Yes, I see the alert you mentioned. However it also goes with other Great programs I use,eg. Groove, Babylon, Snagit, QQ, ... More than half of my everyday apps get Zonealarm's SmartDefense block.
I get feedback from the dev team that PowerSkype doesn't monitor keystrokes. It deals with Mouse movement. We try to remove it if that won't affect the usability
Feel free to use PowerSkype. _________________ Windows 2003

Thanks for the fast reply. Hope you will resolve the problem. I would think that I'm not the only one to be upset when first seeing that notice.
Looking forward to the next release. |

I spent some time on zonealarm's forum to see what's going on with this new feature in ZA 6. Searching mouse and keyboard, I get some intersting links:
http://catsearch.zonelabs.com/search/catsearch?sp-q=mouse+and+keyboard&x=0&y=0&sp-a=sp10030ad9
http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=inst&message.id=34320#M34320
See what guys say about this new feature.

Re: all of a sudden Yahoo Msgr is a key logger?
What you are experiencing is a suspected issue with the new ZA 6.0. There have been other reports. If you see a lot of popup alerts that you know are legitimate processes, see if you can get a screenshot of the alert, save in JPG format, and forward it to security@zonelabs.com .

Techniquely mouse hooking and keyboard monitoring are the same. However they are quite different in privacy area. ZA should be dedicated to provide more info on the details of hooks in Windows, not merely show average end users a general/vague alert window of mouse and Keyboard logging. In my observation it alerts this window even though programes don't monitor mouse and keyboard sometimes.
Anyway keyboard monitor <>(isn't) keyboard logger.
So again we can only state that we don't monitor keyboard at all. We value your privacy as we value ours. We will send our concern to ZA and hope they improve the smart defense in the next release.
Regards

Since I was the first to report this "so called" problem, I feel I should perhaps settle the matter as much as possible.
Your right KB monitor is NOT the same as KB logger. But when the ZONEALARM warning message first came up I read it as saying KB logger. Call it careless reading, maybe even panic.
I started finding that many of my other programs were shwing the same warning message.
But after doing some research myself as well as reading various forums, I find the problem is Zone Alarm.
So it now appears that Powerskype is not guilty. Zone alarm is guily is providing warning messages that at first reading, are not true.
I understand that powersky is going to fix that problem and a few others in the next release.
Powerskype: You have the start of an excellent product. Two suggestions for the future:
1. Allow the recording of conference calls. It seems that at the present you can only record a two party talk.
2. It would be nice to be able to record the audio of a VSKYPE call. |
